End of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, the Corona crisis seemed overcome, and the situation was more or less relatively stable, with a notice-able recovery of the aviation sector. Then the drop of the Ukraine crisis led to future uncertainty with additional rising prices in energy, consumption, and interest rates. Despite all challenges, I am pleased to announce that Luxembourg Airport has successfully concluded 2022 with a passenger volume approaching pre-crisis levels, reaching an impressive 4.05 million travelers. Although a complete return to the numbers seen in 2019 is expected by 2024, the figures for 2022 represent an encouraging 93.3% of pre-pandemic levels.

lux-Airport, in addition to its role as the company responsible for managing the infrastructure of Luxembourg Airport (LUX), is also an active player in the development of the airport surroundings. As such, we have made substantial progress in shaping the future; we laid off the foundation stone and started the works for the new Maintenance Hangar for Luxair, and we moved forward with the construction of the new Police school and the Headquarters of the CGDIS fire brigade.
2022 was another difficult year for Europe‘s aviation sector, one of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. After three years of health crisis, Luxembourg airport ended 2022 with a passenger volume close to its pre-crisis level, i.e. 4.05 million passengers.
The challenges inherent in global supply chains were still a hot topic in 2022. In this instance, the supply of cargo capacity (in place of passenger baggage) on long-haul passenger flights partially increased, which mechanically led to a drop in demand for standard airfreight. In this respect, as the record tonnage of 2021 could not be achieved, the year 2022 records a 12% drop in tonnage compared to 2019. For 2022, Luxembourg Airport is forecasting a total volume of 975,000 tonnes of freight handled.
